What’s the difference between XL and regular HP ink cartridge?

High yield cartridges – HP’s XL cartridges, like the HP 950 XL and 951 XL, enable high-volume users to save on printing expenses. These models lower the ink cost per page, have higher page yields and do not require frequent replacement.

Companies like HP, which sell their ink cartridges at high prices, do so mainly for one reason—they own the patents to the cartridge design and, most likely, the ink that it houses. Some inks can cost you $700 or more in five years, enough to buy you a new printer with a new cartridge. So it is only reasonable for you to look for cheaper alternatives.

Aftermarket ink cartridges offer a way out of these prohibitive expenses as they usually cost only half the price of the original, and sometimes, even less. Additionally, when you use remanufactured cartridges, you also save the environment. Learn more on how to save ink and toner when printing with your HP printer from our blog.

Ways to Save on Ink & Toner Cartridges for HP Printers

You can ensure that your HP-compatible and remanufactured ink cartridges perform with little to no difference in printing quality by doing the following:

  • Obtaining a buy-back or replacement guarantee.

Consumers are guaranteed the right to return a purchase if they are unhappy with it. Take advantage of this opportunity when shopping for remanufactured ink cartridges.

  • Using the non-OEM ink cartridge right away.

This enables you to detect any problems and return the product as soon as possible.

  • Making sure that the print head is clean all the time.

Print heads can malfunction if they are not maintained well. One of the ways by which this can manifest is by flashing an error message, saying that the ink cartridge is empty even when it is not. Optimize your savings by cleaning your print heads first before inserting your remanufactured ink cartridge.

  • Shaking the ink cartridge when the printer has not been used for days.

OEM or not, ink settles when it is not used for a while. Also, you may not notice it, but ink dries up little by little from the nozzle, where the cartridge is exposed to air, and drying can speed up the settling process. To maximize the use of your aftermarket ink cartridges, shake them gently if they have been idle for some time.

  • Cleaning the ink cartridge nozzle.

This removes any blockage that can compromise print quality or needlessly absorb the ink.

Other ways by which you can maximize your ink costs are:

  • Printing in draft mode whenever you can.

Test pages, editable scripts and privately-read reference materials do not have to be printed in normal mode. Your ink supply will last longer when you print in draft or economy mode.

  • Previewing your documents before printing.

Printing mistakes, no matter how small, are simply unsettling. When making presentations to people with strict standards, the late discovery of a printing error is a hassle, leaving you with no choice but to edit and reproduce entire pages. Minimize waste by reviewing your documents first before running them through the printer. Some ways to do this are by proofreading, zooming in and out of the soft copy and using Print Preview.

  • Remembering that printing in black and gray is cheaper than using color.

For printouts that do not need to be in full color, such as help-wanted ads, news clips, and sketch maps, black ink is always more economical than color ones. Save your HP color ink for artwork and client presentations.

  • Removing unessential logos, pictures and ads from your document.

Various websites are filled with sponsor advertisements or captivating scenic pictures. If you have to print the content of a web page but need only the text, you can go about this by switching to their printer-friendly version or saving the page in text form before printing. This way, your HP printer ink can have extra mileage.

  • Considering using a more print-friendly font.

The Arial font is a reliable, all-around lettering style. However, fonts like Times New Roman, Calibri and Century Gothic consume less ink than Arial. Think about that the next time you use your HP printer.

  • Availing of promo deals the next time you shop for ink.

Larger cartridges like the HP 950 XL and HP 951 XL can make printing very cost-efficient. Promo deals on non-OEM ink cartridges help you further lower costs.

Tips for Saving on Ink & Toner for HP Printers

Aftermarket toner cartridges usually yield the same image quality as those provided by their OEM counterparts.

Like non-OEM ink cartridges, they reduce expenses and let you do your part to save the planet. To get the most out of HP-compatible and remanufactured toner cartridges, you can use the same shopping tips that we shared above for aftermarket ink cartridges.

OEM

The most common ink cartridges you will see are original models or OEM models. Original Equipment Manufacturer or OEM printer cartridges are built and designed by your printer’s manufacturer – HP.

Non-OEM/Aftermarket Cartridges

Compatible and remanufactured printer cartridges, meanwhile, are made by a third-party manufacturer, often for a more affordable price. Also referred to as generic or aftermarket printer cartridges, compatible and remanufactured cartridges have been available for quite some time now. However, many printer users are still unfamiliar with these affordable alternatives.

NO, it will not. Third-party manufacturers making and distributing non-OEM cartridges produce the same quality as OEM ink cartridges. These remanufactured and compatible inks also work the same as branded inks.

Remanufactured or compatible HP toner cartridges for sale at YoyoInk costs from $16 to $239 for one pack, depending on the model. Our toner cartridges are way cheaper in price compared to branded toners. Original HP toners cost up to $115 – $500.

You can buy a HP 37X High Yield Black Compatible Toner Cartridge from us at $238.68 dollars, while the original brand costs $433.60. You can save up to 50% on the toner cartridge cost for this particular model.

The high yield original black HP cartridge cost around $40.99. For colored inks it’s about $22.99 per color. The lowest cost of remanufactured high yield HP ink cartridges from YoyoInk is $14.

It depends on each of the products’ model and manufacturer. Some HP models are cheaper than Epson models and vice versa. The crucial thing to remember here is that much of the cost goes back to how much you print.

The page yield is crucial because it leads to the total cost of ink your machine uses regularly. As we’ve mentioned here, you can calculate the cost of ink by dividing the page yield by the ink cartridge price.

There are various ways to clean clogs on your HP cartridges. The easiest way, and the first thing you should always do is running the cleaning function on your printer.

In your printer settings, look for the “printer maintenance” section from the display. For specific instructions according to your machine, you can consult online support or product manuals for the steps.

The cleaning process uses ink in this process and may take one to two minutes. Once done, you can try to test print a page to check print quality. If problems still persist, you can rerun the cleaning process (mostly two to four more times) until print quality goes back to normal.

However, if prints are not still par to quality, you should proceed with manual cleaning.

Manual Cleaning

For manually cleaning an HP printer’s printhead, take note that there are two kinds of setups: some printers have separated cartridges from a built-in printhead, and there are  printers with cartridges having printheads built into them.

For printers with built-in printhead

For printers with print heads built into them, here are the steps for manual cleaning:

  1. Prepare the following: water container, dry paper towels, distilled hot water, and a lint-free cloth.
  2. Fold dry paper towels and place it in the plastic container. Afterwhich, pour hot water in the container, soaking the paper towels. About two inches of hot water will do. This will be used to soak the printhead later.
  3. Remove all of the ink cartridges from the machine and place them facing up on another set of paper towels.
  4. There is a latch located behind the cartridge carriage. Lift it up so that the printhead can be detached from the printer.
  5. Remove the printhead from the machine and then dampen a lint-free cloth with hot water.  Use this to wipe away excess ink on the nozzle.
  6. Place the printhead in the container facing down. Place the nozzle on the paper towels and avoid touching the nozzle since it can be damaged easily.
  7. Soak for about ten minutes. Afterwhich, take it out and set it on a dry paper towel facing up. Have it dried for about 15 minutes.
  8. You can now reinstall the printhead, make sure to place the latch back, and then place cartridges back.
  9. Run the automatic cleaning function process again.

For cartridges with built-in printhead

  1. For cartridges, with integrated printheads, here are the steps for manual cleaning:
  2. Prepare a paper towel damp with warm water, and dry paper towels. Facing down, pat the printhead with the warm damp towel to remove dried ink on the printhead.
  3. Place the cartridge (printhead facing down) on a dry paper towel for about three minutes. Be Careful and avoid wiping the printhead.
  4. Reinstall the cartridges and make test prints. If results are still of poor quality, it may be a sign for cartridge replacement.

Sometimes you must trick your HP printer and make it seem like you’ve replaced the old ink cartridge with a new one. If the printer keeps mentioning that the cartridge needs replacement or the ink level reads “empty,” you should reset the printer so it will identify the new ink cartridge.

Here’s how you can trick HP DeskJet printer:

  1. Pull up the ink cartridge inside the printer carriage.
  2. Check out the copper contacts. If the contacts are on the ink cartridge’s top, turn it over, so they are closest to you.
  3. Put a clear tape on the seventh copper contact within the second row along the left side. Put the cartridge back into the printer. Make the printer run an alignment. Remove the cartridge once the adjustment is made.
  4. Keep that tape over the contact. At the second row from the right, put a tape on the sixth copper contact. Insert the ink cartridge in your printer. Again, run an alignment page.
  5. Get rid of the ink cartridges once the alignment is done. Get rid of the tape, and be sure to remove the sticky residue. Put the cartridge within the printer – it should be ready.

To check your HP toner cartridge, follow these steps:

  1. If you’re using Windows PC, you will have to download a run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool automatically performs troubleshooting diagnostics and identifies any issues you may have.
  2. To check your HP printer’s ink levels, open the HP Print and Scan Doctor and click Printer/Supply Levels. The tool will reveal the ink and toner level.
  3. For Windows 10, iOS, and Android, you will require the HP Smart spp. The app will show the HP ink levels on its home screen.

If your HP printer cannot print because of an incompatible ink or toner cartridge, you’d usually see one of these blinking messages:

“Cartridge error”
“Cartridges in Wrong Slot”
“Cartridge Missing”
“Cartridge Problem”
“Depleted Ink Cartridge”
“Incompatible Cartridge”
“Ink Cartridge Failure”
“Print cartridge(s) missing or not detected”

One of the following solutions can be done:

  • Reset your printer’s internal memory
  • Remove the protective strips from your newly purchased ink cartridges before installing them
  • Clean the metal contacts of the ink or toner cartridge to make sure it’s free from dirt.
  • The cartridge protection for your HP printer is prompted
  • Check to see if your cartridges are properly installed in its slot
